I have had an interest in photography for around forty years on and off, although I do not class myself as a photographer and certainly not a good photographer. I enjoy creating images that work and then printing and mounting the image which is really what photography is about for me. Most of my ideas stem from art rather than other photographers and the key to a good image for me are good composition, impact and originality. I tend to think about photography more than actually doing and most of what I do is computer based. I would best describe what I do as digital photographic art as all my images involve manipulation of one kind or another. I joined my first camera club in 2007 in Scotland where we were living at the time and I also joined the RPS around 2010 and gained ARPSin the creative category in 2016. I am currently working towards FRPS. I had a spell of entering National and International Salons and gained AFIAP and BPE3* along with PAGB, FIAP, ARPS and PSA gold medals. The cost of entering these types of competitions became prohibitive so I just enter the odd Salon to keep up with trends as I judge and lecture from time to time. I gained CPAGB some time ago but did not bother to go for DPAGB but to concentrate on RPS distinctions. I enjoy club competitions and to be honest if it was not for competitions I probably would not belong to a camera club but having said that I also enjoy picking up ideas from club members and speakers. Finally, although I have had many hobbies over the years, photography is the only one that has lasted the course as it offers endless possibilities and satisfies my artistic side. As an aside I recently converted to a Sony a6000 mirrorless camera and sold most of my old Nikon gear. It is too early to say if this was a wise move or not.
Sony A6000 mirrorless, 16-50mm lens, f1.7 prime lens, Nikon 50mm prime/macro lens, Sony 55-210mm zoom lens and 500-1000mm f8 mirror lens. Canon A3 inkjet printer. Photoshop CS3, Photoshop Elements 13, Topaz, Photomatix for HDR, Helecon for macro and Silver Effex for monochrome.
